Off late we can see a change in the kind of movie Bollywood is making and its perspective. 2016 was a year where we witnessed a lot of movies which were different and absolutely brilliant.
The change is not only in the kind of cinema but also in the roles played by directors and producers. Women directors like Zoya Akhtar, Gauri Shinde and Farah Khan have become some of the best and most powerful directors of all time. Actresses are opening up their own production houses and stepping boldly into the previously male dominated roles of the industry.
The kind of roles women are now playing in the movies is very different from the kind of roles they played previously. Now the women characters are shown as bold and self sufficient as opposed to the weepy and dependent roles they did before.
Let’s have a look at some of bollywoods women centric movies which were so brilliant that they left an impact on the society for very long
When we talk about women centric movies, Queen is the first name that strikes us. Queen was a movie about a woman who gets dumped by her fiancé` just a day prior to her wedding. But this does not stop her from going for her honeymoon to Paris. The lead of the movie, Kangana Ranaut leaves packs her bags and leaves for her honeymoon to Paris all by her own.
Queen is one movie which did superbly well at the box office without having any male lead or Khans in the movie.
Pink is a court room drama movie. The movie highlights a woman’s choice of saying no. The movie was brilliant in its attempt to raise awareness about women, their safety and how we need to stop stereotyping women. It also brings about the fact that it’s high time we stop judging women based on what they eat, wear, drink, the time they go out, etc.
Neerja is a biographical movie about the brave flight attendant Neerja Bhanot who gave her life trying to protect the passengers on a plane that was hijacked. Neerja was a powerful movie for all the woman out there because instaed of showing woman as damsel in distress, Neerja shows women in a brave light.
4.Angry Indian goddesses
Angry Indian Goddesses is a break through film in the history of Bollywood. The reason this movie is such a path breaker is because it’s about a couple and their lesbian wedding in India which is prohibited under IPC 377.
Dear Zindagi is another brilliant movie that 2016 gave us. Dear Zindagi is entirely focused on a woman, Alia Bhatt, and her problems in life. The whole movie is about the obstacles she faces, how she deals with them and finally how she overcomes them. Dear Zindagi is simply a brilliant watch.
